Who we are
This website is the face of the Mekong Water Data Initiative (MWDI), a program of the Sustainable Infrastructure Partnership (SIP). Announced by Secretary Pompeo, the MWDI is a cooperative effort to manage and share water-related data to enable officials to make informed water resources management choices. We work under the umbrella of the Lower Mekong Initiative (LMI), a multinational partnership launched in 2009 by the US with Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam to build good governance in natural resources management, sustainable infrastructure, human capital, and socio-economic development in the Mekong River basin.
MekongWater.org is a clearinghouse for water-related data sharing, tools and resources. The site hosts more than 50 tools from 35+ partners on river basin mapping and hydrology, weather forecasting, open-source data analysis tools, ecosystems, and citizen science.
SIP is a not-for-profit program managed by Pact Thailand and funded by the US Department of State (DOS). We work with governments, businesses, academia, civil society and scientists in the Mekong region to tackle shared water resource challenges.
SIP has a twin focus on training and capacity building for managing interactions among water, energy and food systems (the water-energy-food nexus), and on sharing water data through MWDI.
The University of Virginia partners with SIP to manage this website.
